Terry Throndson has been a resident of Rochester, MN, since 1957. He attended grade, middle, and high school here in Rochester. In 1971, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy for 4 years. Terry went to boot camp in Great Lakes. While in boot camp, he was appointed the ESO (Education Service Office) where he helped over 50 of his 68 member boot camp company learn to read and write. His company earned all of the 3 education flags from this. He was assigned to the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (Rosie) Aircraft Carrier. Was stationed in Mayport, Florida in the transition barracks while waiting for Rosie to return from its Med Cruise. While waiting, he attended Damage Control and Fire Fighting Schools. He asked to attended the advance Damage Control & Fire Fighting due to the short information given about NBC (Nuclear, Biological, & Chemical) during Fire Fighting School. After a couple weeks of training at the NBC School, he was then housed in Mayport Fire Fighting Station. Upon Rosie return, was put in “S” Supply Company on board. Soon they learned of his schools and he went to the Engineering Dept. in R (repair) Division. He was assigned to the ships Fire Fighting Party. Upon any fires, flooding ect. they were Rosie’s 1st Responders. In a short time, he became the clerk for R Division and soon after that, clerk for the entire Engineering Dept. He became the Postal Clerk, Supply Clerk for the Engineering Dept. Here we worked with all the other Engineering Depts. for their needs. He flew off the Rosie often for supplies and mail. He worked in the repair, machine, wood working and Fire Extinguisher shops. He worked on the enlisted liberty boats & Officers Liberty Boats. Was assigned Shore Patrol duties. Spent 18 months on the Rosie for Mediterranean & Middle East. Was transferred off the Rosie to Navl Station at Rota, Spain. Spent weeks waiting for new orders. While waiting, flew all over in Navy/military transport planes, helping transport supplies.
From 73-75 was stationed at US Naval Radio Station in Thurso, Scotland until his end of enlistment.
Was postal Clerk, coordinator for USO Shows, Admin. supply clerk, Asst. supervisor for base motor pool, asst. base supply clerk, manager for enlisted club, bowling alley, gym, movie theater, officers club, in charge of personnel coming & going and a supervisor on Thurs Volunteer Fire Dept.
In 1998, met Wayne Stillman and got involved with SFVM.
In 2002 went to “The Wall” in Washington DC with thousands of other Vietnam Veterans & helped take Vietnam Vets. back to The Wall. With help of Gold Star mothers, found pride and dignity as a Vietnam Veteran. Came home, and got involved in Veterans Affairs & Events.
Met up with other Vietnam Veterans, and we started standing quietly holding American Flags at KIA funerals. In 2005, MN. Patriot Guard Riders was founded. Joined MNPGR in 2005, 2007 was elected as a BOD for MNPGR. Became a Wounded Warrior Rider.
In 2007, was awarded the Rochester Mayor Gold Medal Award for Community Involvement.
2003: Chairman for 3 “Support Our Troops Rallies” , helped with Veteran Day Programs, Field of Flags, Vets. Programs at Ironwood Christian Ranch and continue to do so with all veteran Event & Affairs
2005: Asked to be on SFVM Committee, 2019 elected VP of SFVM 2021 elected President of SFVM
